WCGR is Concordia University Chicago’s (CUC) student-run radio and news station. WCGR is run through the Communication Department and is advised by Dr. Susan Ericcson. Campus news is written, directed, filmed, anchored, and edited by students. WCGR normally meets twice during the month, once to plan the news shoot and then again to film it. They post their finished work on YouTube as well as Facebook and Twitter at WCGR News.
The first shoot was filmed on October 3rd, 2019. The shoot went on without a hitch. Many new students have joined as well as a large number of returners. Anchors Cecilia Kochanek and Vicky Carrasquillo had great chemistry and played off each other’s energy making it a great news report. Students are in the process of filming events on campus in order to put together a thorough finding of life at CUC.
When Cassidy Stephenson, WCGR News General Manager, was asked about how the first shoot went and her hopes for the semester, she said, “Our first news shoot of the semester for WCGR was very successful. We had a lot of new faces and old come out to help and learn the different aspects of media production. I look forward to working with them and creating content.”
WCGR will also be working with Norman Parish III to create a documentary about his father, Norman Parish. Norman Parish is one of the “country’s best-known black-owned art galleries, with a focus on works by African Americans and other artists of what is known as the African diaspora,” according to the Washington Post’s article, “Norman Parish, Artist, and Gallery Owner Dies at 75,” by Matt Schudel.
