Concordia University at Chicago held karaoke nights for several years. The first karaoke night this semester was on September 20, 2018. CAB sponsored this event and it was hosted by Olivia Sobieraj and was held in the Cougar Den from 7pm to 10pm. Other clubs also sponsor karaoke night and it sometimes happens more than once a semester.
Students were able to pick any song they liked through YouTube as long as it was a clean version of the song. There was a wide range of music played that night between pop, rock, rap, and some Latino songs were also sung by students.
Olivia Sobieraj stated, “Based on statistics more residents students attend this event compared to commuter students. Also, the sponsor doesn’t have any winner of this event it is just fun for the students.”
CAB planned this event two weeks prior and has students sign up if they want to sing at the start of the night. Some students sang alone, others sang duets and trios. Olivia and Sarah Stevens opened up the night with a song called “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz.
Two students named Drea Reichert and Ben Thin sang a duet together and they chose to sing “White Iverson” by Post Malone. This song had the students engaged and some even got up and danced with them as they were singing.
“This is my first time attending karaoke night and my favorite type of music is rap and metal”, said Drea Reichert. Some other students enjoyed singing older music from other musicians such as: The Beatles, Madonna, and Lee Greenwood.
Karaoke night was a great success. Many students got up to sing and dance together. Other students made new friendships and learned about different types of music and artists. Try to get out of your comfort zone and attend the next karaoke night!
