INDIA

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to Deepak Avinash about his country. Avinash is an international student, from India, studying at Concordia University Chicago. He was more than happy to tell us about his country.

“There are some parts of the world that [once visited] get into your heart, and won’t go. India IS one such place. Top reasons to visit would be: The people, the religion and spirituality, the beaches, the chaos, history and architecture, the adventure, and of course the Taj Mahal.”

When asked why we should visit his country, he explained that India is a place where you will never want to leave. The people and the culture will completely capture you and it will almost be like living in a dream. Of course, many of us have heard of the Taj Mahal seeing as though it is one of the seven wonders of the world.

When I imagine India, I think of the beautiful clothing, the smell of food in the air, the busy streets filled with people, and of course the wildlife! Especially elephants.

India is known for it rich cultural heritage. It is stated that India is probably the most culturally diverse country in the world. There are thousands of different cultures that can be found in this beautiful country. They differ going from North to South, and East to West. The language, religions, music, and dance can also be different depending on where you go. An interesting fact that most people do not know is that four of the major religions of the world were originated in India. Those four religions include; Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

“India has a lot of various food types. If you want spicy food, go down south. If you want the yummiest sweets, go up north. But the Gulab Jamun, Dosa, Idli, Pani Puri, Naan, Chicken Butter Masala and Sambar are a must try!”

During my experience abroad, I found it hard to adjust to the new culture. At times, I felt as though I were a fish out of the water. I asked Avinash if he has felt that way and what he had to adjust to now that he is in the States.

“Apart from driving on the left side of the road which seems unnatural for me and other Indians, the cultural life for students coming from cities in India don’t need much to get adjusted to.”

Luckily, for him, there was not much to adjust to. Besides learning how to train your brain to drive on the left side of the road instead of the side you have been so accustomed to. For many, it is hard to adjust to a new country, especially if you go alone. Avinash wanted to remind us all that it is good to have people (that you know) in places in where you want to travel. It is always best t to have someone who is familiar with the place you are going so you can have the best experience.

“Make sure you travel local and stay local. Expensive hotels can sometimes spoil your vacation. Research your vacation before you leave and make sure you have your local friend.”

I just want to say a special thank you to Deepak Avinash for allowing us to get to know more about his country! I hope this has encouraged some of you to get out there and to travel the world. Better yet, maybe get out there and explore India. I know that I want to go and explore his beautiful country.

Happy exploring,

-H
