Crushing Alzheimer’s Out of the Park
Bright sunshine and warm weather, the perfect combination for going outside and playing a good game of Wiffleball. What is better than just Wiffleball? Playing it for a good cause of course!
On Saturday, April 23rd, Concordia senior Stephen Zahrte hosted “Wiffleballooza”, a charity event to spread Alzheimer’s awareness. The event was held from 7AM until 7PM in the triangle, where participants would come and play a good old game of Wiffleball. Each participant paid $5 to play and funds raised were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association to help find a cure for the awful disease. Donations were made both in-person at a sign up table, or online through the Illinois Alzheimer’s association website.

Stephen chose to organize this event for his senior project to honor his grandfather who passed away last year from Alzheimer’s. His grandfather was an avid baseball fan, so that is why he chose Wiffleball.
For most of the day teams of four to five people played each other in a nine-inning game, while the rest of the day was just playing for fun not really keeping score, including a home run derby towards the end. Weather was also not a problem as God blessed the event with a beautiful warm and sunny day throughout. Sodexo was even kind enough to leave a massive bag of popcorn for the people at the event.
The event brought in $75 through online donations and $150 from the funds raised in person at the event. Stephen said he was happy with the way things went, and way thrilled to see many of his friends show up to support the cause. With every Wiffleball smacked with a bat, the closer to cure we will be to Alzheimer’s.
