Another season of WCGR radio is well underway and student enthusiasm continues to grow. The broadcasting season started on the first week of February, and originally had 10 one-hour shows running over the 24-7 broadcasting stream.
Since then, two more shows have been added to the broadcasting list with another one in talks of joining the WCGR airwaves. Now there are twelve programs running during weekday evenings. In total there are 24 students involved in radio either as DJ’s or show managers.
Show topics range from many things: sports, music, theology, entertainment, world events and Concordia events. Students also have the advantage of extracting their show from the radio skimmer recorder which records everything that goes on WCGR’s airwaves. This allows students to perfect their on-air skills and have portfolio content for future broadcasting jobs.
The 24-7 streaming is currently seeing a change in music automation systems, and other means of temporarily streaming music when student DJ’s are not doing shows is being worked on. For right now the only things going over the airwaves are the scheduled programs. The temporary music stream is being put together and will hopefully be ready before Spring Break. Funds for a new permanent automation system are still in waiting and likely will not be available until next year.
WCGR radio has also added more use of PSAs from campus organizations. Groups like VOICE, and Student Services have submitted PSAs for activities or surveys they conduct with the student body. Once submitted to WCGR faculty advisor Susan Ericsson, they are printed out and put in the radio booth for students to read on air. WCGR is always looking for more PSAs, and it is a great way to advertise your organization.
