How to have Halloween in Rome!

As we all know, Halloween is a well loved event in the U.S. With that being said, how do you bring that love to a country that has just recently celebrated it only 5 short years ago?

Simple, find friends, dress up, and have a good time!

Last night, some friends and I had a Halloween party/ birthday party for three of our friends who have or are having their birthdays while overseas. We decided it would be really fun if we all dressed up and had a little Halloween party.

We were kind of nervous that we would not be able to find any costumes because as stated before, Halloween is not as well known here as it is back home. We were thrilled because we found this really cool store where they sold amazing costumes and other Halloween goodies!

We were all so excited to see what everyone would dress as. There were a lot of last minute costume ideas because we did not discover the store until the night of, but somehow we ended up making really good costumes.

We also decided to walk the streets of Rome to see what kind of reactions we would get from people. A lot of people starred at us and were impressed with our costumes. Some people waved and I  thought it was kind of fun because it seemed as if we were famous, when in reality we were really just college students walking around in costumes.

There were other people around our age who also dressed up for this special occasion. It was cool seeing what everyone dressed as and it felt like we were back at home, even it was only for just one night.

Not only did we see people our age who were dressed up, but we also saw little kids in cute costumes. It was interesting to see how they went around trick-or-treating versus how we would normally do it back home. Houses are not as common in the city so there are mainly apartments, and the apartment that we live in the kids were going door to door asking for candy! Sadly we did not have any to give them, but I also think they knew which apartments to ask and which to avoid which I found interesting. Another difference that I noticed was that they would go into different stores. The stores either gave them candy or stickers or something memorable from the place in which they went. I thought that was really creative and cool. The kids seemed to be really excited about it and it looked like they had a great time!

My favorite thing was looking at the Halloween decorations because they really did a good job. Some places looked really spooky, as where other places just had a few pumpkins and seemed really inviting. All in all I would say they did a wonderful job incorporating the spirit of the theme.

All in all, we had a really great time, and now we have ever lasting memories.

Stay spooky,

-H
