Student Government and Open Meetings Act Training
By Jordan Mann
It was revealed last week that the Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board erred in their call for a runoff election for the position of SGA President. Dean of Students Jeff Hynes told The Spectator, there were not enough board members present at the meeting to constitute a quorum when the decision for the runoff election was made.
Hynes suggested the constitution should be rewritten to make election rules clear. A good idea, but that does not address the problem of holding meetings without a quorum.
Upon becoming a commission or board member in the village of Oak Park, new members are informed: “The Illinois General Assembly now requires all current elected and appointed members of boards and commissions, as well as all officers of the village, to complete Open Meetings Act training. All new members have 90 days to comply.”
The Illinois Attorney General offers both training and certification. The training takes about 90 minutes. The SGA should be following the same rules governing meetings of all municipalities in Illinois. All SGA members and facility involved in the SGA should be required to take this short 90 minute course and display their certification.
