{"id":5702,"date":"2022-11-10T14:54:12","date_gmt":"2022-11-10T20:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=5702"},"modified":"2022-11-10T14:54:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-10T20:54:12","slug":"peer-gynt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=5702","title":{"rendered":"Theater and Music Departments Present a New Adaptation of Ibsen&#8217;s &#8216;Peer Gynt&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Concordia University Chicago theater and music departments have collaborated to put on a joint production of Henrik Ibsen\u2019s famous 19th century play <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer Gynt,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with music composed by Edvard Grieg, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thursday and Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer Gynt <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tells the story of\u00a0<\/span>Peer, an irresponsible everyman who squanders away his life making fortunes, losing fortunes, and chasing women throughout.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The play was adapted by music professor Maurice Boyer, D.M.A., and English professor Andrew Pederson, M.F.A., from a massive five-act, forty-scene epic into a more palatable and concise performance lasting roughly 90 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis goes back a good many years, to when I first discovered the incidental music Edvard Grieg wrote,\u201d said Boyer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Grieg&#8217;s score for\u00a0<em>Peer<\/em><i>\u00a0Gynt\u00a0<\/i>features famous tunes such as \u201cIn the Hall of the Mountain King,\u201d and \u201cMorning Mood,\u201d which have been used in numerous movies and TV shows, including\u00a0<i>The Social Network\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>Mad Men<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boyer worked on the music and text of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer Gynt <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a long time, even writing his own translation of the vocal movements and action of the play. Earlier this year, Boyer called on Pederson to help collaborate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe turned it into this hybrid which is neither a straight play nor a concert,\u201d said Boyer. \u201cThe music is on equal footing with the play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boyer and Pederson\u2019s adaptation focuses on the spiritual and merciful aspects of the play. Pederson promised that the audience is \u201cgoing to see a story of redemption.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat excites me the most is getting to work with Dr. Boyer in this capacity,\u201d said Pederson. \u201cHe\u2019s a brilliant conductor and musician who\u2019s always had a deep respect for theater.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CUC\u2019s production of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer Gynt <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features an orchestra conducted by Boyer and student actors portraying the roles under Pederson&#8217;s direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combined departments performed their first two shows last week. November 10th and 11th are the last two days to see this unique performance in Bergman Theater, at 7:45 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seating is limited to 100 people per show.
