{"id":5616,"date":"2022-12-01T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T15:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=5616"},"modified":"2022-12-01T09:00:01","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T15:00:01","slug":"prayer-and-praise-offers-a-contemporary-worship-alternative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=5616","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Prayer and Praise&#8217; Offers a Contemporary Worship Alternative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a dimly lit Krentzman choir room on Wednesday, three vocalists and four musicians <\/span>on guitar, bass, cajon (a wooden box used for percussion) performed the songs \u201cReckless Love,\u201d \u201cWaymaker,\u201d and \u201cMore than Conquerors&#8221; to an audience of roughly 40 students.<\/p>\n<p>The attendees stood shoulder to shoulder, tapping their feet and nodding their heads to the up-beat rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>The weekly 9 p.m. service is called Prayer and Praise, a Christian group at Concordia University Chicago that provides another on-campus option for worship beyond the traditional Lutheran services the school is known for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can relate to a lot of these songs because you listen to them outside of worship,\u201d said sophomore Scott Treptow, who plays lead guitar and heads up Prayer and Praise. \u201cSinging them with everyone else is moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worship organization is entirely student-led and offers attendees the opportunity to sing contemporary Christian songs together, read scripture, break into small groups for prayer, and listen to a devotion shared by a fellow student.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lutheran Church\u2014Missouri Synod, and by extension its Concordia universities, are often known for their traditional liturgical worship settings and slow-paced hymns played on an organ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith traditional worship, it\u2019s very much organ and out-of-the-book, and it can sound monotone and bland,\u201d Treptow said. \u201cI would not listen to hymns in my free time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus pastor the Rev. Jeff Leininger, Ph.D., encouraged student involvement in worship services.\u00a0 \u201cIt fills a need for many students on our campus,\u201d said Leininger. \u201cEspecially those who come from a worship tradition that does not use hymnody and organ.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CUC offers 10 traditional services for students throughout the week. Although some students prefer either traditional or contemporary music over the other, other students don&#8217;t have a preference and say that they\u2019re both appropriate for Christian worship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s very important to have a balance of traditional and contemporary worship,\u201d said junior pre-seminary student Isaac Conrad, who regularly attends Prayer and Praise. \u201cWhile traditional worship focuses on our reverence for God, contemporary worship, such as Prayer and Praise, creates a much more accessible environment for anyone to join.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contemporary songs and brief devotion offer students a personal Christian message, while the small groups allow peers to interact with one another on an individual level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s easier for people to connect with and really understand what worship is about,\u201d said sophomore Gabrielle Mintrup. \u201cWe create a really tight-knit community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prayer and Praise starts at 9 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays in the choir room.
