{"id":3328,"date":"2019-01-24T17:15:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T23:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=3328"},"modified":"2019-01-24T17:15:41","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T23:15:41","slug":"communication-class-interviews-jesse-thorn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=3328","title":{"rendered":"Communication Class Interviews Jesse Thorn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Caleb Dehning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a rare sight to see college students willingly engaging with course material. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it\u2019s a challenge to keep the $100+ textbook closed for as long as possible as a semester progresses. However, sometimes students are given the opportunity to directly interact with their own coursework. As was the case with professor Todd Hauser\u2019s topics class on Journalistic Interviewing this semester. The small class of six students recently set up and conducted a phone interview with Jesse Thorn, the host of the podcast that outlined the course. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These students would listen and respond to hour-long podcasts of Thorn\u2019s show called \u201cThe Turnaround\u201d, where he would sit down with professional interviewers (such as Ira Glass, Larry King, and even Jerry Springer). Bussard, a Communication minor, enrolled in the course. \u201cHe seemed like a really down-to-earth guy and he had some extremely relatable stories.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The topics covered by the student\u2019s questions ranged from Thorn\u2019s experience with the various interviewers, from the podcast shows discussed in class, to advice on obtaining dream careers.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cMy favorite piece of advice he gave was how we shouldn\u2019t be concerned about money when it comes to doing what we love,\u201d reflects Karina Kosmala.  \u201cHe was very adamant that while we should be concerned with making ends meet, money alone should never hinder us from getting or creating the types of jobs that would make us happy in life.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cThe Turnaround\u201d with Jesse Thorn is a \u201cMaximum Fun\u201d studios podcast and can be subscribed to on any podcast streaming app, or downloaded from iTunes.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Caleb Dehning It\u2019s a rare sight to see college students willingly engaging with course material.
