{"id":2814,"date":"2017-10-12T19:39:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T01:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=2814"},"modified":"2017-10-12T19:39:37","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T01:39:37","slug":"living-on-vs-off-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/?p=2814","title":{"rendered":"Living On vs. Off Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here at Concordia University Chicago we don\u2019t have the luxury of having a ton of different housing options to choose from.\u00a0 There are no fraternity houses, on campus student apartments, or even off campus apartments owned by the school.\u00a0 A Concordia student\u2019s options are limited to living in the residence halls or strictly off campus.\u00a0 In talking to a few people I have found that there are both advantages and disadvantages to both living situations.<\/p>\n<p>I met with Director of Housing Services Jessica Klingberg and Director of Residence Life Matthew Weekley to discuss this topic.\u00a0 They both informed me that technically no one is supposed to live off campus until their senior year, but some people are able to get around that rule.\u00a0 If you can prove moving off campus has much more financial benefit to you then that is the best way to get off before senior year.\u00a0 Both Klingberg and Weekley agreed that it is much better to live on campus rather than off.\u00a0 Klingberg stated \u201ccollege isn\u2019t just about school, it is about the social aspect as well.\u00a0 By living on campus you can be much more connected socially to everything that goes on here at Concordia.\u201d\u00a0 She has a point, by living on campus a student can be involved in everything that goes on without having to drive back and forth all the time.\u00a0 Plus the meal plan, while it technically isn\u2019t included with the housing payment, is really nice to have while on campus.<\/p>\n<p>I also spoke with senior Austin Thompson about living off campus, as she currently lives in an apartment in Elmwood Park and lived across the street last year in the Thomas Street apartments.\u00a0 She personally feels that it is better to live off campus.\u00a0 Austin likes the freedom living off campus gives her and feels that the driving back and forth really isn\u2019t that much of a hassle.\u00a0 She said that overall it has saved her money and that was the prime reason she was able to get off as a junior.\u00a0 Although, she did mention that if the new residence hall would have been built last year she would have stayed on campus instead of moving off.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, there are both pros and cons to living on campus vs. living off campus.\u00a0 Living on campus provides a meal plan and a great social aspect while living off campus can be cheaper and the student has more freedom.\u00a0 In the end one may not be better than the other, it just depends on the person.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here at Concordia University Chicago we don\u2019t have the luxury of having a ton of different housing options to choose from.\u00a0 There are no fraternity houses, on campus student apartments, or even off campus apartments owned by the school.\u00a0 A Concordia student\u2019s options are limited to living in the residence halls or strictly off campus.\u00a0 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":42,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2814","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-life-culture","category-opinions"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2814","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/42"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=2814"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2814\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=2814"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=2814"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/spectator.cuchicago.edu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=2814"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
