Surprised to even be receiving a Thanksgiving dinner, I enjoyed my time and forgot for those few hours where I was…

The AIFS crew got to celebrate with a large turkey, corn bread, mashed potatoes, and the Roman version of pumpkin pie. Although we were not with our families at home, we were with our family in Rome.

This year there is a lot to be thankful for, so I decided that I was going to write a blog about it…

So here is what I am extremely thankful for this year!

1) I am thankful for the opportunity I have been given to study abroad

Despite my nervousness of living without family and friends in a new country, I have loved every single minute that I have spent abroad. I have learned so much about myself that I had not discovered yet. I have been able to see more places in this world that I never imagined could happen. I am so grateful that I was able to receive an education outside of my own country so that I am able to compare and contrast the different teaching and learning styles. This has always been a dream of mine, and now I have made it into a reality.

2) I am thankful for the people I have met

As said many times before… I was afraid that I would not make any friends on this trip. Luckily, that was not the case. I have met so many people while studying abroad, and have made friends that will last a life time. I have also created friendships among the Italian interns. We are always laughing and having fun together, and we really get to communicate with one another which is the best part. We are all students, so that is something we have in common and can closely relate to. It is also fun when we speak in Italian because it really helps me better understand their language, and vice-versa when we speak in English. Not only are the friends that I have made in the same program as me, but I have made friends while traveling to other places in Europe. I am beyond grateful for their kindness and acceptance. Most importantly I am grateful for their friendship.

3) I am thankful for my friends and family back home

It is always hard to be away from the ones you love.

My family has made being away from home so much easier because of their support. They are constantly telling me how proud they are of me and that they are so happy that I am following my dreams. I think this is important because, without that faith/ support, I don’t think I would be as happy as I am right now. They even came out to Rome to visit me, and I thought that was the most amazing thing. Of course, I have my days where I feel sad and homesick, but I know that they are just one phone call away. I am thankful for my friends because they will constantly check in and see how I am doing. They are also very supportive and I know that I can talk to them about anything.

Needless to say, this opportunity has been a blessing in my life and I am beyond thankful for it.
