I have taken the great opportunity to study abroad in China this semester. I have been here for one month now and so far it has been so amazing. I am studying at Sichuan University (四川大学) on the Huaxi Campus （华西坝）which is located in Chengdu, China. The campus is very beautiful here and it is a small campus similar to the size of Concordia. The main campus where I study Chinese is much larger and is more of the size of ISU. The program that I am going through for study abroad is G-MEO. The programs founders started this because they felt that students should experience different cultures to better enhance their education and lives. This semester the program has 14 total students studying here. We all live in the international dorms on campus. So the other students in our building speak English and are from different parts of the world.

So far in the first month of being here I have gone to so many different places that are popular in Chengdu. I have also made many friends who are locals here. Two of the main places that we went to were Jinli Street and the Wen Shu Monastery. Jinli Street is a labyrinth of shops that are either family stores or chain stores. Another great thing about Jinli Street is the local cuisine that it offers. One popular street food dish is squid. The squid tastes kind of rubbery, but it was good.

The second place that we went to was the Wen Shu Monastery. This is a Buddhist Monastery that people go to worship or just to visit and experience the religion. The Monastery had many rooms with many different sculptures of Buda’s and special rooms for the Monks. It was very interesting to visit and see how things worked.

We currently had the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday happen. This is also referred to as the Moon cake festival by locals. Some of the other students and I went to a special Moon Cake event where we learned how to make moon cakes and we watched traditional dancers. It was a very unique experience.

Right now we are in the Golden Week holiday so we have no classes and so I am out exploring Chengdu.
