The money for these Cougar cards comes from the student’s annual tuition. The question that ponders the mind of many students: Is this enough money to live off of?

Residents vs. Commuters

The money plan for residents appears to be much different than the plan for commuters. Their plan not only has Cougar Cash, but a plan for meals as well. They sleep on campus, so the plan gives them more money to spend on campus. For commuters, the amount of money allotted per semester used to be $125.00. At the start of this semester a few commuters, myself included, noticed that our Cougar Cash was decreased to $100.00. CUC commuter Nallely Herrera, a junior at CUC became concerned with this matter, she spoke with Anthony Estrada in the Business Services Office. Herrera was told commuters had always received the same $100.00 in Cougar Cash each semester, but as commuters we knew that was not true. She looked on her previously bills and saw her bills were changed, and we had, in fact, received more Cougar Cash last year.

Commuters claim it is not enough

What concerned Herrera, was not whether or not they charged her the correct amount, granted this was a factor in her drive, but she was mainly concerned why they decreased the amount by $25.00 without informing the commuter students. Herrera claims she spends most of her time on campus, but scarcely spends her money in the hope of making it last as long as possible. She also claims this specific method of saving affects her health whether by eating unhealthy food, or not eating enough. Most of my friends happen to be commuters, so I decided to ask them this same question and I received the same answer in different ways; the majority of their time is spend at CUC, so how can they eat often if they are only offered $100.00 in cougar cash for four months. Gerado Molina, a junior at CUC, feels we should receive more Cougar Cash because he has spent his allotment in the first two months of this semester. It has become evident this is a problem many of the CUC commuters face, but have chosen to stay quiet about, just like our financial office, as they have chosen to keep us in the dark for some time about our Cougar Cash.

By Maybelle Cardona The students at Concordia University Chicago (CUC) receive money on an ID card called Cougar Cash in order to buy things located only on campus.
