As you may know, there are many clubs and organizations here at Concordia University.\u00a0However, many clubs and organizations have\u00a0been doing their best to reestablish a name for themselves in hopes to get more students\u00a0involved.\u00a0Included\u00a0clubs and organizations reestablishing their names\u00a0is the\u00a0Black Student Union.<\/p>\n
B.S.U has been a well-known name around this campus for a long time. It was created for\u00a0students of color, by students of color in regards to building a community and spreading\u00a0awareness across the entire campus body. The goal was to create a \u201csafe space\u201d for those\u00a0who felt left out or unwanted. Throughout the years the purpose of the club has\u00a0changed.<\/p>\n
Senior LaDonna Hawthorne, President of B.S.U, had some time to discuss the\u00a0changes she wanted to see this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have very much been inactive for the past few years and my goal is to\u00a0change that,” said Hawthorne,”Being on a predominately white campus, I want to create a place for\u00a0African-American students to congregate and feel welcomed as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
The mission of B.S.U this year is to raise cultural awareness and to provide the safe place\u00a0where students can have the opportunity to make a great change on campus and where\u00a0they can relate to one another without feeling any judgment.\u00a0Hawthorne wants to make sure that the students know that all are welcomed to attend\u00a0the meetings every Tuesday at 10:45am in the KCC, and that all are invited\u00a0to any B.S.U. event\u00a0throughout the year.<\/p>\n
They have had two events this past semester which included: a Flag Football\u00a0Tournament, and the Spades Tournament, which saw great turnouts.\u00a0The next upcoming event that they are having is a Halloween Party, located in the\u00a0basement of Mary Martha, on Friday October 30th.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are many great things in store for the Black Student Union, and I cannot\u00a0wait to reveal it to CUC” said Hawthorne.<\/p>\n
