Located in room 10 of the Koehneke Community Center (KCC), The Black Jew Dialogues (BJD) is a two man comedy group that travels the country explaining the absurdity of racism and the importance of diversity. The couple is Ron Jones and Larry Jay Tish. Because of their ethnic background, Jones plays the part of the black man and Tish plays the part of the Jew. They start by explaining the history of racism towards the blacks and the Jewish and, more importantly, how they have worked together throughout history. In their introduction they warned of their use of harsh words during their performance, however, Jones said, “We use them only to show people they exist.”

While the vast majority of the skits were poking fun at African Americans and Jewish people, Jones pointed out at the end of the act that at some point in history everyone was persecuted and felt pain and oppression. They also poked fun at stereotypes, which was a crowd favorite. Dressing up as stereotypical ethnic grandmas, the two used humor to prove that racism and prejudice comes from fear, termed “feareotypes.” The goal of these shows is to showcase the importance of diversity, especially in colleges.

Most of the BJD’s performances are at colleges and workplaces. Their goal is to create more diversity among students and faculty. After the show there was a brief discussion about diversity where Jones asked the audience what they thought about diversity at Concordia. Seeing as there were more adults present than students, there was a big discussion about the diversity among staff. It was a unanimous decision that diversity has to start from the top and work down. The goal for their shows is to create a better understanding of a healthy cultural dialogue.

By Erin Murphy RIVER FOREST – On November 11th Concordia University hosted The Black Jew Dialogues.
